Andrew Mason's Job Is On Thin Ice - Business Insider
Until today's earnings announcement, things were looking good for Andrew Mason, the founder and CEO of Groupon.
The daily-deal company's stock had more than doubled from where it had bottomed out in November. It crossed $5?an important point for investor psychology and institutional support, since some mutual funds can't buy stocks trading below that point?early in the year.
In after-hours trading, it gave most of those gains up.
There's been a lot of speculation about whether Andrew Mason will keep his job. The last word from the company was that the board and management were heads-down working on turning the company around.
After this earnings disappointment and a dismal, low-growth outlook for the first quarter, it's not clear why Mason is the right person to do that.
The only thing that's going well for Groupon is its e-commerce business, Groupon Goods. And Groupon has an executive, COO Kal Raman, who knows e-commerce well. He worked at Amazon and ran Drugstore.com. (Groupon has also been quietly staffing up with a host of Amazon veterans.)
So it's pretty obvious what Groupon needs to do: Milk the declining daily-deals business for cash flow by continuing to cut marketing costs; invest in Groupon Goods; and fix or dump its European business.
What you're left with is an interesting e-commerce business with a well-known brand, one that can potentially sidestep Amazon by focusing on surprising consumers with great one-off deals and unusual inventory. (By the time Amazon gets around to price-matching Groupon offerings, Groupon will have moved on to selling other stuff.)
The question is whether it makes sense for Groupon's quirky founder to run that business, or an experienced e-commerce executive.
By the stock price, it seems like the market is voting against Mason.

Omar tries to dispel fears over police bill (Lead)

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday sought to dispel fears expressed by civil society representatives that the proposed state police bill would give sweeping powers to the constabulary.
Abdullah clarified that the very intention of placing the draft of the proposed police bill in the public domain was to receive the public feedback which could then be incorporated in the draft bill before it is put to vote in the state legislature.
"Why this manufactured outrage regarding the draft police bill? It hasn't passed public scrutiny let alone been seen by me and the cabinet," he wrote on his micro-blogging site Twitter.
"Public feedback will be incorporated; Law Deptt will vet, I will clear it, cabinet will approve it, both legislative houses will vote on it. It will THEN go to Governor for his signature & FINALLY it is implemented so there is NO chance of bad legislation passing scrutiny," Abdullah said.
"This is why I ordered the Home Deptt to put this in public domain in the Ist instance so that feedback would lead to better legislation."
There has been a controversy in the civil society, especially in Kashmir, during the last few days with many arguing that instead of implementing its promise of having the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) revoked, the government was trying to bring in a legislation that would give sweeping powers to police.
But Principal Secretary, Home, Suresh Kumar said the draft Jammu and Kashmir Police Bill had to go through rigorous process of scrutiny like discussions and debate before it becomes a law.
"This is merely a draft bill, which could undergo changes after considerations of suggestions from public and other quarters," he said at a press conference in Jammu.
On the limited time given to public for suggestions, he said the time has been extended till March 1.
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, has called the proposed bill "a potential martial law" while opposition People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has labelled it as another "draconian law".
The 76-page Jammu and Kashmir Police Bill, 2013, posted on the state home department's website Feb 15, allows the state to declare any area disturbed, proposing setting up "Special Security Zones (SSZs) where administrative and development measures are integrated with police response for problems of public order and security".
The bill proposes that police will be able to set up and arm village defence committees and recruit special police officers (SPOs).
Under the draft legislation, a police officer would be considered "always on duty" and the government as well as the complaints authority deputed to hear cases against him/her would have legal immunity regarding decisions taken by them "in good faith or intended to be done in pursuance of the provisions".
In comparison, immunity under the AFSPA is available only to the army and the central paramilitary forces in areas where the act is extended and not to the local police.

Pentagon F-35 program chief lashes Lockheed, Pratt
AVALON, Australia (Reuters) - The Pentagon program chief for the F-35 warplane slammed its commercial partners Lockheed Martin
U.S. Lieutenant-General Christopher Bogdan made the comments during a visit to Australia, where he has sought to convince lawmakers and generals to stick to a plan to buy 100 of the jets, an exercise complicated by the second grounding of the plane this year and looming U.S. defense cuts.

"What I see Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney doing today is behaving as if they are getting ready to sell me the very last F-35 and the very last engine and are trying to squeeze every nickel out of that last F-35 and that last engine," Bogdan told reporters at the Australian International Airshow in southern Victoria state.
"I want them both to start behaving like they want to be around for 40 years," he added. "I want them to take on some of the risk of this program, I want them to invest in cost reductions, I want them to do the things that will build a better relationship. I'm not getting all that love yet."
A Lockheed Martin executive at the airshow declined to comment when reached by Reuters, saying he was unaware of Bogdan's comments. Executives from Pratt & Whitney could not immediately be reached for comment.
Bogdan caused a stir shortly after joining the F-35 program last August when he described the relationship between the government and Lockheed Martin as the worst he'd ever seen. There had been little improvement since then, he said.
"Are they getting better? A little bit," he said. "Are they getting better at a rate I want to see them getting better? No, not yet."
If the project stays on track, Pratt & Whitney will eventually provide 4,000 engines and Lockheed Martin 3,000 planes.
The Pentagon plans to buy 2,443 of the warplanes in the coming decades, although many analysts believe U.S. budget constraints and deficits will reduce that number.

Bogdan was also critical of what he suggested were leaks from Pratt & Whitney's camp about the engine issue, which led the Pentagon to suspend F-35 flights last Friday.
Two sources told Reuters that Pratt & Whitney is 99 percent sure the fan blade problem that grounded the jets was not caused by high-cycle fatigue, which could force a costly design change, and the aircraft could be flying again within the week.
"Until all those tests are done and I see the results, I don't know what's going on," Bogdan said. "However ... my gut would tell me it's on the spectrum of the minor side - 99 percent is bold, flying next week is bold."
Bogdan also gave the example of taking six months to close a deal with Pratt & Whitney for engines on its fifth bloc of jets, shortly after General Electric Co
"Now, you would think a company like Pratt & Whitney that was just given the greatest Christmas gift you could ever, ever get for a company would act a little differently," Bogdan said.
Bogdan is flying back to the United States this weekend, just in time to hear about the future of U.S. military budgets, which are slated to be cut by nearly $500 billion over the next decade, an amount which could double unless Congress acts in the next week to avert spending reductions known as "sequestration".
Bogdan said he was confident the F-35 program would remain on track and on budget if he was given the discretion to deal with any cuts.
The risk is that money is cut from the $6 billion set aside for the development program by the end of October next year.
"I need every penny of that $6 billion to get over the finish line," Bogdan said. "If they take money out of development something's going to have to give. I'm either going to have to push the program out or I'm going to have to shed capability."
Budget cuts aside, Bogdan said he was confident of bringing the cost of each plane down to around $90 million by 2013, compared to around $120 million now.
Budget cuts have already forced Italy to scale back its F-35 orders, and Turkey has delayed its purchases by two years. Orders from Japan and Israel have buoyed the project, and additional Israeli orders are expected in 2013.
Lockheed is building three different models of the F-35 for the U.S. military and eight countries that helped pay for its development: Britain, Canada, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and Norway.

Gaming Bill Passes Indiana Senate | News - Indiana Public Media
Indiana?s gaming industry would get help from the state under legislation passed by the Senate on Monday.
The Senate-approved legislation would allow live table games in racinos, allow riverboats to move their facilities on land and reduce the amount of gaming revenues going to local communities.? The state would then use that money for tax credits for the casinos.
But Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) says that plan hurts communities that are already suffering.
?I think it?s unfair.? I think the state is reneging on a deal,? he says.
But Phil Boots (R-Crawfordsville) says Indiana?s casinos need help as they face competition from all the surrounding states.
?We can lose, or expect to lose anywhere from $60 million to $100 million a year in revenue to the state of Indiana just by doing nothing,? he says.
Boots pledged to continue working on the bill as it moves through the legislative process. The bill passed 32 to 18 and heads to the House.

Enlightened, Season 2
When early looks at Enlightened began to make the rounds, they foretold a series about a woman unhinged, an Almodovarian campfest anchored by a fierce Laura Dern. Jagged-jawed, with rivers of mascara running from her eyes, Dern?s face filled sublime early posters and trailers, and the opening moments of the pilot episode did not disappoint. We first meet Amy Jellicoe in a toilet stall face down, contorted and crying, before she launches into a swift but utterly devastating meltdown. Before those three minutes finally end with Amy prying open an elevator door and shrieking epithets at a former lover, the scene likely scared off half the show?s potential audience in one frantic swoop.
Those who stuck around, of course, have found an incredibly sensitive series about the joys, process, and marked perils of reinvention. The end of the second season this weekend will feel more like an end to one extended miniseries: Creator Mike White has said that though he always envisioned Enlightened as a series about a whistleblower, he simply got too lost in his characters to jam that entire plot into a single season. Instead he has brought the arc full circle with this cycle of episodes, tracing Amy?s journey from professional and personal ruin to self-styled revolution, and, finally, back to an uncertain future not unlike when we first met her.
So it was fitting that Sunday?s penultimate episode, ?No Doubt,? ended on a kind of mirror of that pilot sequence. With Amy?s supposedly rebuilt life collapsing?she finally realizes she has no job, and Jeff says they shouldn?t see each other?we saw a familiar, ominous look in Amy?s eyes as she marched out of his Los Angeles apartment to her car. She climbed in crying and desperately grabbed the steering wheel. Then someone honked. And honked. As Amy flew out of her car, the shaken honker told her she just wants to parking space. ?That?s all you want?? Amy screamed. ?That?s all you fucking want??
That we seem to be essentially where we began in this moment doesn?t diminish the series? journey so far. Amy?s recovery began as a personal reinvention, but after she had her epiphany in Hawaii, she returned to find the same world that had sucked the life out of her. Her plan to take down Abaddon, and her bumbling double life as a whistleblower, have been a gloss?a fantasy she is finally realizing could leave her even more profoundly in flux than she was before.
When Amy is finally through yelling, she smashes into several cars, another old pastime, and speeds down the long, endless road ahead. She clearly doesn?t know where she?s going.

Falcon Pro reaches Twitter?s 100k token limit
Falcon Pro, arguably one of the best Twitter clients available for the Android operating system, has just reached its 100,000 token limit set by Twitter. The limit was set by Twitter back in August of last year, and it limits 3rd party apps, who utilize Twitter?s main features, to only 100,000 users. Falcon Pro has hit this limit only 3 months after it launched its app, catching them by surprise.
As of right now, Falcon Pro has created a petition. The creators hope that the petition will get enough signatures to convince Twitter to extend Falcon Pro?s amount of tokens. As of 8 hours ago, the petition has accumulated over 600+ signatures. Whether this helps or not is completely up to Twitter. Falcon Pro is also working on the issue of pirates. According to its stats, only 40,000 people have actually purchased its app, meaning there are 60,000 who either aren?t using the client anymore, or have pirated the app.

Falcon Pro is also asking users who don?t use its client anymore to revoke access to the app via their Twitter settings. This way there can be additional tokens freed up for other users. Falcon Pro has included a disclaimer in its app description warning users of the 100k limit. Hopefully it will stop users from giving the app a 1-star rating. However, it still has to deal with the refunds for people who bought the app, but can?t access it.
Falcon Pro is currently finding other ways to get an extension on its tokens, and it?s trying to avoid any methods that may breach Twitter?s terms of service. While it?s important to get more users access to its app, Falcon Pro doesn?t want to jeopardize anything for its current users. So as of right now, all its users can do is sign its petition and hope that Twitter?s lenient.

It may not be pretty but Wales are not about to give up their RBS Six Nations title without a fight. Gone are the swagger and flair synonymous with Welsh rugby and with it the days of glorious failure.
This is now a far more pragmatic Wales, putting substance before style and learning to win ugly. In torrential Roman rain, this victory was about as ugly as it gets.
Just as in Paris a fortnight ago, this display was about guts and determination to dig out the win as the scars of eight successive defeats begin to heal.

It does not make for pleasant viewing but in the end the outcome was the same and few will be complaining if they return to Cardiff to face England on March 16 for the title.
Wales are proving hard to beat and if not for their horrendous opening half against Ireland, would now be more than halfway to another Grand Slam.
The title, however, remains in their sights after another win on the road, their fourth in a row. Happiest of all will be defence coach Shaun Edwards.
Not since Brian O'Driscoll squeezed over at the start of the second half of their opening game have Wales conceded a try.
Edwards said: 'We have excelled ourselves in defence to keep a clean sheet for the last two games and the only points we have conceded have been from scrum penalties. But a big part of defence is also to create turnovers and chances for our attack, and we did that again.'
Wales also showed a ruthless streak. In France they had one scoring chance and took it; here in Rome they had three and scored tries from two, through Jonathan Davies and Alex Cuthbert.
It was a measure of the game that when Davies touched down for the opening try after 44 minutes, it was his first touch of the ball.
A limited game swung in favour of Wales during a calamitous five minutes at the start of the second half, when Italy fumbled a clear scoring chance before Davies capitalised on a disastrous mix-up in the home defence.

And the tie was ultimately decided while Italy's captain, Martin Castrogiovanni, watched from the sinbin after yet another scrum ended in a penalty.
Captain Ryan Jones said: 'It was a good day at the office for the scrum and we've got six very happy "lumpers" in the dressing room. But it was a great collective effort from all the forwards.'
Wales managed to silence the raucous home crowd with a promising start, though a penalty from the opening scrum allowed Kris Burton to cancel out Leigh Halfpenny's earlier effort.
Adam Jones, Richard Hibbard and Gethin Jenkins exacted their revenge with a series of devastating drives that twice enabled Halfpenny to kick Wales further ahead, to lead 9-3 after 20 minutes, though the lottery of the scrum allowed Burton to cut the gap before half-time.

Given the handling skills, or lack of them, in the often torrential rain, it appeared the only way either side were going to score.
Cuthbert's fumble handed Italy an attacking position only for the home side to knock-on before Burton sliced his attempt to drop a goal.
Wales fared little better and Halfpenny pushed his effort wide before half-time then almost gifted Italy a try just 40 seconds into the second half.
Mike Phillips fumbled Burton's chip over the Welsh rush defence, Italy got a boot to the ball ahead of Halfpenny but Tommaso Benvenuti failed to collect, with the line at his mercy, under pressure from Dan Biggar.

Burton then sliced another drop-goal attempt from in front of the posts. Wales wasted no time in making the Italians pay. Biggar hoisted a speculative kick but had the tenacity to chase and regain possession.
Phillips capitalised on clear space behind with a clever chip and with Edoardo Gori and Burton looking to each other to sweep up, Davies picked up and touched down.
Burton clawed back a third penalty after Halfpenny had converted but momentum swung Wales' way when Poite brandished a yellow card for Castrogiovanni after yet another scrum went to ground.
Again Wales capitalised on the chance, kicking up field from where Biggar outfoxed the Italian defence with one well-aimed pass that found Cuthbert's angled run.
Italy could not lay a hand on the wing once he was clear and he darted into the corner for his seventh Test try.
Halfpenny expertly guided his conversion home from out wide and Wales were too smart - and Italy too limited - to make the final 19 minutes nothing less than a formality.

HTC settles with the FTC over claims of insecurities in logging software
Much of the firestorm surrounding remote phone diagnostics in late 2011 ultimately enveloped Carrier IQ and the providers that used it, but HTC was also scorched by accusations that its phones' software flaws (including in HTC Loggers) made privacy breaches possible. The FTC went so far as to level charges against the company for allegedly not doing enough to secure software. That saga may be winding to a close now that HTC's American division has agreed to settle the whole affair. The smartphone designer has to do more than just deliver patches, which it already has -- it's now required to run a "comprehensive" security program to weed out flaws in advance, and it will be the subject of outside assessments every other year for the next 20 years. As tough as those conditions may seem, they're easier than dealing with fines or stiffer penalties. They'll hopefully prevent repeats of any privacy scares as well, even if the real-world risk has been slight.

Microchip implant lets blind patients see shapes, skip the prosthetic
An eye-implanted chip from Retina Implant has restored patients' ability to discern light during its latest trial, according to German researchers. The device works in a similar fashion to the newly FDA-approved Argus II retinal prosthesis to return limited vision in patients with photoreceptor cell diseases like retinitis pigmentosa. Unlike that system, however, light is picked up via 1,500 pixels on a retinal implant instead of an eyeglass-mounted camera. The signal is boosted by a coil implanted in skin behind the ear and sent back to so-called bipolar cells still active on the retina, which in turn send an image to the brain through regular neural circuits. A small battery mounted behind the ear -- the only external sign of the device -- contains controls for brightness and contrast. The recent trial let 8 out of 9 patients see in varying degrees, with three in the study even able to read letters and see the faces of family members. Given that Second Sight finally crossed the FDA's bionic eye barrier, hopefully we won't have to wait nearly as long for research like this to become a product.

It's the QBs, not the scout
Getty ImagesThe stories of the football influences on Jim Harbaugh were well told and often during the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. But perhaps the biggest impact on his NFL Scouting Combine preparation isn?t Bo Schembechler or Jack Harbaugh, but Judge Judy.
While discussing the need for draft prospects to be forthcoming during interviews, Harbaugh admitted being a fan of the syndicated television jurist.
Because of course he did.
?Somebody that?s not truthful, that?s big, to me,? the 49ers coach said. ?I?m a big fan of the Judge Judy show. And when you lie in Judge Judy?s courtroom, it?s over. Your credibility is completely lost. You have no chance of winning that case. So I learned that from her.
?It?s very powerful, and true. Because if somebody does lie to you, how can you ever trust anything they ever say after that? Ronald Reagan, another person of great wisdom and advice, ?Trust but we will verify.? ?
Of course, the discussion of trust centers on tomorrow?s arrival of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te?o, of the fake dead girlfriend fame.
But when Harbaugh was asked if the trust factor made Te?o undraftable, he replied: ?No. I wouldn?t say that.?
That?s why even though the interview Te?o does with the assembled media tomorrow will draw plenty of eyeballs, the meetings he holds with teams this week will carry more weight.
?I think there?s certainly a part of being with somebody for a half an hour or 15-minutes or an hour or two that you can know somebody,? Harbaugh said. ?Some people have that ability to have a 30-minute conversation with them and you walk away thinking you really know that person. Others, you can?t.
?You have to validate a meeting with a person or two or three conversations with their track record, their relationships with other people at their school, their teammates, their trainers, equipment managers, teachers, professors, their family. People usually leave a track record of success or failure or success and failure.?

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, the top U.S. Air Force commander in Europe, is the likely choice to become commander of all U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, a senior NATO official said Thursday.
The job opened up this week when President Barack Obama's first choice, Marine Gen. John Allen, announced he would retire after 19 months commanding allied forces in Afghanistan in order to attend to his wife's health issues.
The NATO official was not authorized to discuss internal deliberations and spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity.
If nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Breedlove would be the first Air Force general to hold the top NATO job since Joseph Ralston in 2000-2003. Breedlove would succeed Navy Adm. James Stavridis, who has held the post since 2009.
Breedlove, a native of Forest Park, Ga., earned his Air Force officer commission in 1977 through the Reserve Officers Training Corps program at George Tech and has extensive overseas experience, including numerous tours of duty in Europe.
A fighter pilot by training, Breedlove served in Spain and Germany in the mid and late 1990s; in Italy from 2004-05, and in Germany in 2005-2006 and 2008-2009. He has held his current post as commander, U.S. Air Forces Europe, since last July.
Breedlove also served tours in South Korea in 1991-1994 and 2000-2001.
The job of commanding NATO forces in Europe is considered one of the more prestigious command positions for U.S. generals. The U.S. has about 80,000 troops based in Europe.

Conservation Triage

Let?s say you?re in charge of picking the survivors. You?ve got a boat?oh, let?s just make it an ark, shall we??and you can load it with any kind of animals you like. The species you coax on board will probably make it through climate change. The ones you leave on shore probably won?t. While you can choose your passengers, there are limits: Put too many critters in the ark and the whole thing, you included, will start to sink.
Which species will you save? Will you pick the rarest, the largest, or the smallest? The strongest or the weakest? The most beautiful ? or just the tastiest?
The thing is, most of us are already making these choices, and making them all the time. Not that we think much about it. But every time we decide what to buy, where to build, or who to put in charge of spending our tax dollars, we?re indirectly deciding which species deserve our consideration and which species can do without it.
It?s easy to ignore this reality and pretend that we can and will protect everything. The U.S. Endangered Species Act, which turns 40 this year and is still considered by many to be the most powerful environmental law in the world, made essentially all species eligible for federal protection. But federal, state, and private dollars are finite, and in recent years, it?s become all too obvious that the demands of conservation are functionally infinite.
You?ve heard the news: Species of all sizes and descriptions are contending with habitat destruction, pollution, and the accelerating and far-reaching pressures of climate change. Some species will adapt. Those that aren?t picky about their habitats or diets, such as crows and coyotes, stand the best chance. But species that require particular habitats, such as polar bears, or a single type of prey or pollinator aren?t likely to make it, at least not without huge investments of time and money.
So in recent years, some conservationists and scientists have been pushing for a more explicit, systematic approach to conservation decisions?a kind of triage system in which a rational set of criteria is used to allocate limited resources. Environmentalists have long been wary of any sort of triage approach to species conservation, and understandably so. Explicit triage is, in a way, an admission of failure, an acknowledgement that we?ve fallen short of the Endangered Species Act?s goal of protecting all species without prejudice. And any such acknowledgement could well be exploited by traditional foes of conservation.
But some environmentalists now say the status quo is an even riskier path. ?The way we?re doing it right now in the United States is the worst of all possible choices,? says Tim Male, a vice president at Defenders of Wildlife. ?It essentially reflects completely ad hoc prioritization.? Politically controversial species attract more funding, as do those with symbolic value (think bald eagles) or furry, expressive faces (think lemurs and baby seals). ?We live in a world of unconscious triage,? says Male.
So how to make these life-and-death decisions? Scientists have proposed several approaches. One is to prioritize species that play some sort of essential role in their ecosystem?top predators such as wolves, for instance. Another is to focus on protecting extremely rare and unusual species, with the hope of preserving a diverse genetic pool and with it the ability of species to evolve and adapt to new conditions. The EDGE of Existence program, run by the Zoological Society of London, takes the latter approach. It has a fascinating collection of weird and wonderful species in its portfolio, ranging from the Chinese giant salamander to the two-humped Bactrian camel.

Pop Life ? Waiter, there's a bad review in my soup
Nick Munier is raging. So raging, he?s threatened legal action over a bad customer review on TripAdvisor. I?m sure he hasn?t done this lightly. It?s probably the twice-baked straw that broke the saut?ed camel?s back with a pomegranate jus. Online review resources can be brilliant at making customers aware of your spot, but positivity on sites of their ilk is just one side of a grubby coin, where anyone can let rip about the disasterous coffee they had, or a starter that was worse than genocide, or a piece of meat that was so awful you wouldn?t even feed it to a dog. It?s the customer spitting in your food. I don?t know Nick Munier. I?ve eaten in Pichet once and never went back because the food was too salty. I?m petty like that. But I?ve no reason not to believe he?s a nice dude and good at what he does.
Internationally, chefs have cultivated a collective personality that is macho, short-tempered and overly sensitive. Rappers swear, models are vacant, taxi drivers talk too much, and chefs throw their toys out of the bread basket. But restauranteurs, like all business people have a duty to their business. It must be incredibly frustrating to have people bitch about you and not being able to control that. But hey, that?s life, right?
Social media can obviously be of huge benefit to restaurants. From Joe Macken?s tweet seats, to 777?s free cocktails upon opening, Bite Canteen giving away free meals, the Fumbally relying on word of mouth off and online, and food bloggers being given first taste. Social media matters when you want to get a buzz going. If loads of people are chatting about a spot, it creates both a positive sentiment, publicises a venue, and injects a bit of FOMO for those who haven?t been there yet, making it more likely to get them through the door. Whether they?ll turn that ?firstism? of an early visit to a regular occurrence is another thing.
Even making a point of not using social media can draw attention, such as the surprisingly large amount of coverage the South Frederick Street restaurant Bite received when they banned customers taking Instagram photos of food upon the launch of Bite Canteen. It was a tongue in cheek rule poking fun at the compulsive food photography that takes place the second a plate is set down on a table, and a great publicity stunt to boot, not that the owners of Bite thought it would blow up as much as it did.
Restaurant reviews by the pros in the pages of newspapers and magazines still matter too, but when you?ve slimmed down your eating out budget to once or twice a month, you want everything; decent food, a buzzy atmosphere, the social capital of telling people you were there when somewhere first opened, Instagramable food presentation, and good value. It?s a lot of ask for, even from the large clutch of new places that have hit Dublin in the past 12 months or so, most of which operate at a mid-market level where demanding customers mightn?t be able to tick every box they?ve imagined. Reviews also set expectations extremely high. And punters are more inclined to use over-hyped superlatives or extreme negatives when describing their food and experience. Crackbird is not the second coming, it?s a great casual dining experience where you get to eat tasty chicken. Damson Diner is not going to change your life, but their cocktails are brilliant.
And so to TripAdvisor. The democratisation of restaurant reviews, much like the democratisation of music, film and theatre reviews throws up as many problems as benefits. It?s a public forum and people can say what they like. You might be lucky enough to get informed people racking up comments, but more often than not, unless they?re nerds and/or pedantic, people tend to vocalise far more when they?ve something to complain about. When was the last time you tweeted an internet or mobile provider to commend them on their consistent service, as oppose to ranting about your signal dropping?
The cult of the foodie, where anyone who has the special skill of leaving their apartment and walking into a cafe is somehow apparently now Anthony Bourdain, has given many people who frequent places that serve food the delusion of understanding what that food is really about. And not only what the food is about, but how the restaurant operates, how it compares to some amazing place they went to in New York or London or Madrid, how kitchens work, what the costs of running an eatery are and so on. It?s kind of like saying anyone who has ears also has the ability to critically dissect Beethoven?s entire works. Like most things in life, you?ll only really grasp something if you?ve done it yourself. But the reasoning professional critics offer is that they have accumulated a large amount of diverse experience, have tightly honed critical faculties, a good ability to articulate, and an editor who can exert quality control. That?s fair enough. It means that someone who has all of those attributes can talk honestly and interestingly about food without having ever owned a restaurant, and it means that someone who has never picked up a guitar but has similar attributes can write a decent gig review. You don?t have to work professionally as a critic to have those skills either. Personally, I take the word of people who I feel know their food. Some of them do it for a living, others don?t. Some critics are not to my taste at all, but if you?re pretending to know about something and are arrogant enough to articulate that opinion under the guise of expertise, then you?re really just talking through your hole. It can sometimes be a bit difficult to differentiate between a pretender and someone who knows their stuff, but that?s where personal judgement comes in.
You can go to loads of restaurants but that doesn?t mean you know restaurants. I listen to loads of music, but that doesn?t make me Radiohead.?People also love talking about restaurants and chefs. I don?t really know why. But they do. People talk more about restaurants than they do about pubs or hotels, gyms, petrol stations, shops, hairdressers or supermarkets. It?s something we like to converse about. Eating a meal is obviously an intrinsic part of our society, and we like to mouth off about it.
Restaurants occupy a rather unique space in public sentiment, because of the fallacy of ?the customer is always right?. I think anyone who has ever worked as a chef, a barman, a waiter, a barista, or a restaurant host knows that?s complete rubbish. The customer is in fact, a pain in the face. A tonne of customers are self-satisfied, entitled, rude, brash, delusional, dismissive and have the expectations of a diva. It?s almost as if restaurants are the one place where people feel they can exert some oddly-placed sense of power. I AM BEING SERVED, OBEY MY EVERY WHIM. I waited tables in Mao for two years and was brought to tears on more than one occasion by customers, but never by the staff. I waited tables in what was then the Bistro beside Grogan?s too, but was fired after two shifts because I was sick of taking people?s crap. The tips were great there though, in fairness. Many customers are lovely. Many customers are dicks. It?s like: great play, shame about the audience. But at the same time, Irish outlets often have utterly sub-standard service, bad food, and over-priced menus. More often than not, when we eat out, it?s just average. You?re entitled to have food rage when you?re paying for something below par.
What Munier is really angry with though, is something that bugs anyone who opens themselves up to online commentary. It?s the same annoyance that clouds one?s brain when someone leaves a completely uninformed comment on an article, or slates an album on a blog without really listening to it, or throws around ridiculously personal comments about politicians. Everyone is a critic, but now everyone has a platform to voice those criticisms, no matter how informed or uninformed those opinions are. There?s nothing more frustrating for a restauranteur, musician, footballer, theatre maker, director, writer, or whoever else having what they do criticised publicly by someone who doesn?t know the field. Getting kicked by someone who does hurts, but getting kicked by a so-called ?amateur? annoys.
Does it matter? Sure. TripAdvisor is a massive platform read by tourists and locals alike. In tighter times, people will tend to take less of a punt on somewhere to eat, instead saving their Friday night dinner dollars for a spot that has a decent reputation and a lot of positive chatter. The review Munier takes issue with might be well out of order, but in an age where everyone has an opinion and an ability to publish that opinion online, I?m afraid you also have to sometimes take the rough with the smooth. At least they didn?t ask for chips.
