GLENDALE, Ariz. ? All that was missing in Cam Newton's spectacular NFL debut was a victory.
For all of his big passing plays and Arizona's many miscues, the Cardinals beat Newton's Panthers 28-21 on Sunday. Newton threw for 422 yards and two touchdowns, setting the record for yards passing by a rookie in his NFL debut and tying Matthew Stafford's mark for most yards by a rookie in any game.
Newton earned the respect of his opponents in the process.
"He's a big, athletic, strong quarterback," Arizona inside linebacker Paris Lenon said. "The guy can run the ball and throw the ball well. He's definitely going to be a major force in this league."
Newton's big numbers came even though the play book he's using remains limited.
"We really had to pare it back an awful lot and it's going to grow each week," first-year Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.
Newton completed 24 of 37 passes with one interception.
"He was everything everybody didn't expect him to be," said Steve Smith, who caught eight of those passes for 178 yards, including TDs of 77 and 26 yards. "He was on point, he made some great runs, he made some great reads, made some fantastic throws. He made some throws out there that honestly as a receiver it made it easy to catch them."
The statistics seemed to mean little to the big, young quarterback, who was unbeaten in his BCS championship season at Auburn.
"The last time I lost a game was Navarro Junior College," Newton said. "What do you want me to say, it feels great? It is not a comfortable feeling for me."
The Panthers had first down at the Arizona 11 late in the game, and even got an extra down on an offside call, but failed to score.
"There's going to be a lot more things I can look back on tomorrow after I watch the film," Newton said. "One thing I know is you have to capitalize. When you're in the red zone, you can't take the sack, you can't digress."
Newton overshadowed a nice Arizona debut for Kevin Kolb, who was 18 for 27 for 309 yards, including touchdown passes of 48 and 70 yards. Kolb talked about the negatives, most significantly Arizona getting inside the Carolina 6 twice in the second quarter and coming up empty.
"You look at what could have been," he said. "When you go back and analyze it I think you are going to see that besides five plays, we dominated them. Even on defense, they could probably say the same thing. That's a big deal for us."
Arizona trailed 21-14 going into the final quarter before Kolb connected with Early Doucet for the 70-yard score.
Then rookie Patrick Peterson, the No. 5 overall pick in the draft who had trouble with Smith much of the day, took a punt back 89 yards for what proved to be the game-winning score.
"With me being a defensive back, I barely have a chance to get my hands on the ball," Peterson said. "That's why I love punt returns so much."
Peterson began to strut, not realizing Carolina's Mike Goodson was gaining on him. Peterson glanced around, realized the error of his ways, and sprinted away, diving over the goal line to put Arizona ahead 28-21 with 7:15 to play. It was the second-longest punt return in franchise history.
"Yeah, he was pretty close," Peterson said.
Kolb said "anybody else fair catches that thing."
"That just shows you the confidence that he has in himself and how tough of a kid he is," Kolb said. "He's going to be a major weapon for us."
With the help of a roughing-the-passer penalty against Clark Haggans, the Panthers drove downfield late and had first down at the 11.
Four consecutive passes were incomplete, but an offside penalty on fourth down moved the ball to the Arizona 5 and gave Carolina one more chance. Newton threw over the middle to Goodson to the 2, but he was a yard shy of the first down and the Cardinals ran out the clock.
"I don't think it's about survival, I think it's about overcoming," Doucet said. "It says a lot about our team and our coaching staff. Last year we had some of those same situations and we didn't come out with a win. We ended up losing the game."

Capturing CO2 from power stations and storing it deep underground carries no significant threat to human health, despite recently voiced fears that it might, a study has shown.
Researchers found that the risk of death from poisoning as a result of exposure to CO2 leaks from underground rocks is about one in 100 million far less than the chances of winning the lottery jackpot.
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh studied historical data on deaths from CO2 poisoning in Italy and Sicily, where the gas seeps naturally from the ground because of volcanic activity.
They found that the number of recorded deaths was very low and say that engineered gas storage underground could be even safer, as it will be planned and monitored.
Recent CCS projects in northern Europe and Canada have been criticised by residents over health concerns arising from potential leakage.
Carbon capture and storage enables collection of CO2 before it can escape into the atmosphere. The technology involves the collection of CO2 at a power station or industrial site. The gas is liquefied and piped to the storage site, where it is injected deep below ground. The gas is stored in microscopic rock pores and eventually dissolves in underground water. Storage sites will have several barriers between the store and the surface.
Storing CO2 gas underground prevents it from contributing to global warming. Such technologies will play an important role over the next 50 years, as a bridge to the development of clean energy.
Jennifer Roberts from the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences, who undertook the work, said: "These Italian CO2 seeps are natural, are often neither sign-posted nor fenced off, and yet there have been remarkably few accidents."
Professor Stuart Haszeldine of the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences, who led the study, said: "Our findings show that storing CO2 underground is safe and should allay any concerns that the technology poses a significant threat to health."

TOKYO ? Up and down Japan's devastated northeast coast, survivors prayed and communities came together Sunday to mark six months since the massive earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, a date that changed everything for them and their country.
As the world commemorated the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, Japanese parents hung colorful paper cranes for their lost children and monks chanted in front of smashed buildings. Thousands also marched in the streets to demand that the country abandon nuclear power because of damage to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.
At precisely 2:46 p.m., they stopped and observed a minute of silence.
The magnitude-9.0 earthquake produced the sort of devastation Japan hadn't seen since World War II. The tsunami that followed engulfed the northeast and wiped out entire towns. The waves inundated the Fukushima plant, triggering the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
Some 20,000 people are dead or missing. More than 800,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed. The disaster crippled businesses, roads and infrastructure. The Japanese Red Cross Society estimates that 400,000 people were displaced.
Half a year later, there are physical signs of progress.
Much of the debris has been cleared away or at least organized into big piles. In the port city of Kesennuma, many of the boats carried inland by the tsunami have been removed. Most evacuees have moved out of high school gyms and into temporary shelters or apartments.
The supply chain problems that led to critical parts shortages for Japan's auto and electronics makers are nearly resolved. Industrial production has almost recovered to pre-quake levels.
But beyond the surface is anxiety and frustration among survivors facing an uncertain future. They are growing increasingly impatient with a government they describe as too slow and without direction.
Masayuki Komatsu, a fisherman in Kesennuma, wants to restart his abalone farming business.
But he worries about radiation in the sea from the still-leaking Fukushima plant and isn't sure if his products will be safe enough to sell. He said officials are not providing adequate radiation information for local fisherman.
"I wonder if the government considers our horrible circumstances and the radiation concerns of people in my business," said Komatsu, who also lost his home.
Another resident, 80-year-old Takashi Sugawara, lost his sister in the tsunami and now lives in temporary housing. He wants to rebuild his home but is stuck in limbo for the time being.
"My family is not very wealthy, and I only wish that the country would decide what to do about the area as soon as possible," Sugawara said.
He might be waiting for a while. The Nikkei financial newspaper reported this week that many municipalities in the hardest-hit prefecture of Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima have yet to draft reconstruction plans.
Of the 31 cities, towns and villages severely damaged by the disaster, just four have finalized their plans, the Nikkei said. The scale of the disaster, the national government's slow response and quarrels among residents have delayed the rebuilding process.
Workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant are still struggling to meet a goal of bringing it to a cold shutdown by early next year.
"We are barely keeping the reactors under control and the situation is still difficult," Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency spokesman Yoshinori Moriyama said in Tokyo.
In Fukushima city, dozens of citizens rallied Sunday outside a government-backed international conference at which scientists agreed that the radiation danger from the nuclear plant was far less than Chernobyl. The protesters accused conference organizers of trying to underestimate the risk for children.
Citizens also demonstrated in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, where thousands of anti-nuclear protesters demanded that the country give up nuclear power. Activists circled the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry holding banners saying, "Nuclear power? Goodbye."
Criticism of the government's handling of the disaster and nuclear crisis led former Prime Minister Naoto Kan to resign. Former Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda took over nine days ago, becoming Japan's sixth new prime minister in five years.
He spent much of Saturday visiting Miyage and Iwate prefectures, promising more funding to speed up recovery efforts and trying to shore up confidence in his administration.
But the trip was overshadowed later in the day by his first big political embarrassment. Noda's new trade minister Yoshio Hachiro resigned, caving into intense pressure after calling the area around the nuclear plant "a town of death," a comment seen as insensitive to nuclear evacuees.
Public support for the new government started out strong, with an approval rating of 62.8 percent in a Kyodo News poll released last Saturday. Hachiro's resignation will likely translate into a drop and new doubts about Noda's ability to lead.
Regardless of politics, what's clear is that the road ahead will be long.
"Given the enormous scale of the destruction and the massive area affected, this will be a long and complex recovery and reconstruction operation," Tadateru Konoe, the Red Cross president, said in a statement. "It will take at least five years to rebuild, but healing the mental scars could take much longer."

MARSEILLE, France ? Italy's finance minister says his country may have to take further austerity measures on top of massive spending cuts currently making their way through parliament.
Giulio Tremonti said Saturday "we have to do the inventory of the things we have done and check our progress and if needed we'll have to take further steps."
He was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of the Group of Seven developed nations in Marseille, France.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) ? The burst of bullets came suddenly in Nevada's capital.
Just before 9 a.m., the gunman stepped onto an IHOP parking lot from his blue minivan with a yellow "Support Our Troops" sticker on it. He opened fire, then continued into the restaurant and marched resolutely toward a table of uniformed National Guard members before shooting each one of them, and fatally wounding three of them, authorities said.
Eduardo Sencion would kill four people and wound seven others in all before shooting himself in the head in front of a bustling business complex in an unexplained display of violence Tuesday. One of the wounded, a woman and National Guard member, would later die at an area hospital.
The breakfast-time massacre sent tremors of fear through Carson City at a time when lawmakers were not in session. In the immediate confusion after the shooting, officials prepared for a citywide assault.
A motive remained unknown late Tuesday, as lawmakers, business owners and law enforcement officials in this close-knit, government-driven city of 50,000 struggled to understand what drove Sencion to turn an AK-47 assault rifle on his hometown.
Authorities are investigating whether the military members were targeted. Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong told The Associated Press on Tuesday night that authorities, at that point, did not think the shooter set out to target people in military.
"But of course, it's clearly a heavy, heavy concern from here," he added.
Sencion shot each of the five Nevada National Guard troops sitting together at the back of the restaurant. Another woman was shot and killed.
Family members told investigators that Sencion, 32, was mentally troubled, but he did not have a criminal history. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital hours after the mass shooting.
"The sheriff may never know the motive," Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen said.
The shooting started just before 9 a.m. roughly two miles from the state Capitol in Carson City.
Sencion stepped out of the minivan and immediately shot a woman near a motorcycle before charging into the chain restaurant. Witnesses said he had unloaded a magazine when he was still less than 12 feet from his car.
The gunfire prompted Ralph Swagler, the owner of a nearby barbecue restaurant, to grab his weapon. But when Sencion started toward him, Swagler backed away.
"I wish I had shot at him when he was going in the IHOP," said Swagler, who owns Locals BBQ & Grill. "But when he came at me, when somebody is pointing an automatic weapon at you ? you can't believe the firepower, the kind of rounds coming out of that weapon."
Sencion struck each of the Guard members in the restaurant in what witnesses described as a seemingly intentional attack. He then exited the restaurant and fired shots toward the barbecue restaurant, shattering the windows. He also fired toward an H&R Block and a casino across the street.
Sencion had shot himself and was lying injured in the parking lot by the time officers arrived. A crowd of reporters and onlookers could see a body on the ground, covered with a white sheet except for the feet, clad in tan boots.
Fran Hunter is a frequent IHOP customer who works in a pet supply store next door but made a last second decision Tuesday to eat at the casino coffee shop across the street.
"It turned out to be a good decision," she told the AP. "If you know the IHOP, they had to be sitting ducks with that long narrow aisle ? if they were at those tables with no way to get out."
Servicemen flocked to a Reno hospital after the shooting, nervously waiting for word on those killed and hurt.
"It's hard to believe something like this would happen to really good people," said Spc. Lee Amato, 33, a Nevada Army National Guard member. "It's like a hole, something taken away. It's mind-boggling and hard to comprehend."
Sgt. 1st class Cameron Anderson, 31, of Reno, was tasked with driving the Guard's chaplain to the hospital.
"You go a whole tour in Afghanistan and no one is shot," Anderson said. "And you go to IHOP and several are shot. It's a shock."
The names of the victims, including the three Guard members ? a woman and two men ? who were killed, were not immediately released.
Officials were analyzing the assault rifle to determine whether it is automatic or semi-automatic. Sencion left two more guns in the van ? another rifle and a pistol, authorities said. Furlong said law enforcement agencies would continue investigating as they conducted searches through the night, although he did not give further detail or say where.
The violent outburst rattled Nevada's capital city after the long Labor Day weekend when many officials, including Gov. Brian Sandoval, had left town. Carson City is also a jumping off point 30 miles south of Reno for travelers headed to Lake Tahoe or back to California across the Sierra.
Nevada officials initially feared the worst as news of the shooting spread. The state Capitol and Supreme Court buildings were briefly closed and extra security were sent to guard state and military buildings in northern Nevada to prevent further violence. The IHOP is several miles from the Guard's state headquarters complex.
Sandoval was in Las Vegas when the shooting occurred. He soon returned to the capital, where he was briefed by police and his security adviser.
"Everything is being done to ensure the public's safety," Sandoval said in a statement. He ordered flags to half-staff through Friday night in honor of the killed guardsmen.
Sencion was born in Mexico and had a valid U.S. passport. He worked at a family business in South Lake Tahoe and had no known affiliations with anyone inside the restaurant, Furlong said. He was not in the military.
Sencion filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2009, listing more than $42,000 in outstanding debts for a car, several credit cards and some medical expenses. The case was discharged four months later.
A lawyer representing some of Sencion's family members called the shooting "an aberration of his character."
"He's a gentle, kind man who was very helpful to friends and family," Joe Laub told The Associated Press. "I couldn't venture to guess what would cause him to do something as horrible as this."

I have noticed recently that several of my patients have never heard of EFT (aka the Emotional Freedom Techniques). Perhaps they had seen the acronym on a side bar of my newsletter but never inquired further. Others are aware that my wife Alina is only one of a few certified trainers of EFT in the world with Dawson Church, director and EFT Universe, one of the three most primary certifying organizations. The rest of you may wonder what EFT and Chiropractic have to do with each other and how could they possibly be used in a mutually supportive way. I figured that it was about time for me to answer that question.
As a chiropractor, I most commonly look to my patients? needs as to how I can assist them in reducing pain and increasing their body?s function. Chiropractic has always focused on removing nerve interference so the body can better heal itself. That idea goes all the way back to DD Palmer and chiropractic?s inception. Coincidentally, I overheard Alina just the other day explaining EFT as a way of removing energy interference in the body that when present, reduce the body?s ability to heal. Hmmm, how similar is that? EFT is also referred to as an emotional version of acupuncture, but without needles. It is wonderful as a self-help technique that can be learned and used on ones own, whereas chiropractic adjustments should never be self-administered.
So one might ask why I would ever use a technique that may reduce the need for my services? The simple answer is that some physical issues I view as primarily mechanical, with an emotional or energetic component intertwined. Other patients present pain from stress, life patterns or behaviors that are primarily caused by past behaviors that no longer serve them that need to be witnessed and transformed into something new. EFT is fabulous for achieving that.
To give you an idea of when I use EFT, here are a few examples. Recently a patient came in with the recent onset of migraines, which began just as their husband started having panic attacks. Another was suffering from anxiety and stress to the point that the he felt that his head would explode and he had an upcoming long airplane trip and a coinciding fear of flying. Another came in with chronic back pain that he noted increased when he thought of anger associated with a recent marital separation. The intertwining relationship of physical ailments with emotional stresses are infinite.
Too often patients were told that their symptoms were in their head. This was not a complimentary diagnosis, and basically meant that the symptoms were psychosomatic, or that the physician figured that the patient was ?making it all up.? Psyche (mind) and Soma (physical body) are of course related, how could they not be? The moment you have pain, you have a thought about it and then often follows an emotion, which then causes neurotransmitters to be released in the brain which then resulting in hormones being released into the bloodstream which then has a physiological affect on things such as heart rate, blood pressure, immune response, etc. So of course our physical condition and psyche journey together.
So, how do I decide when to put on my chiropractic hat and when do I slip on my EFT hat? There are no rules, just intuition. Sometimes, I utilize it when what I thought would help is not helping sufficiently. Sometimes I feel that there is something not being said and it is a way for a patient to share something important that they did not feel was relevant to their presenting complaint. In any of the ways it presents, the use of EFT almost always surprises me with its ease and its effectiveness.

Keep this in mind, as it means you only have to commit yourself to three weeks of regular exercise. You could round it up to a month! Don?t just exercise when you feel like it, but include it as part of your everyday routine. The trick is to get yourself used to working out at a particular time every day, and after a month, you may find it?s already a comfortable part of your routine.
The internet can actually help to motivate you to exercise, if you know how to leverage social networking. You can use Facebook or a similar site for this purpose. If you do not have friends on Facebook, then this may not be ideal for you. But you can always join fitness groups on Facebook, you know. So you?re not weaseling out of this that easy! Then what you do is let them all know what you are doing. When you?ve completed a workout, update your status and tell people. If you need help staying motivated, tell your friends. Ask them to comment on your page, wall, or wherever with supportive and encouraging comments. You will want to keep working out to impress your friends.
You can only do so much at one time, so relax. Your abilities and endurance will increase, so your pace will speed up on its own. These fitness tips to help you with motivation are just a handful out of many. You can also devise your own techniques to help you. Fitness can really improve the quality of your life, so try to find a way to remain motivated so you stay with it.

A classic cake receives a fruit-flavored boost from figs and apricot. A syrupy rum glaze keeps this sponge cake moist and decadent.
Inspired by Ernestine Di Paola, of Belleclare Nursery in Plainview, New York, this delicious recipe for fig apricot rum chiffon cake is one that might become a family favorite. After baking the cake in an angel-food-cake pan, soak the cake with a dark-rum syrup and brush it with an apricot jam glaze. Garnish the cake as desired; fresh apricots, figs and whipped cream are ideal accompaniments.
RECIPE
FIG-APRICOT RUM CHIFFON CAKE
Serves 8 to 10
Ingredients:
For the cake:
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour (not self-rising)
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
5 large egg yolks, at room temperature
8 large egg whites (about 1 cup), at room temperature
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
For the rum syrup:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 unpeeled medium orange, sliced
1 unpeeled medium lemon, sliced
1 cup dark rum
For the apricot glaze:
1 cup apricot preserves
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice
For the garnish:
2 seventeen-ounce cans whole Kudota figs, drained
1 seventeen-ounce can whole peeled apricots, drained and pitted
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
Directions:
To make the cake:
Set oven rack to lowest position. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. With a handheld electric mixer, beat in vegetable oil, pineapple juice, vanilla extract and egg yolks on low speed until combined. Increase speed to high and beat for 5 minutes more or until batter is smooth.
In the clean bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat egg whites on medium speed until frothy. Add cream of tartar, and continue beating on medium speed until egg whites have tripled in size and form stiff peaks, about 5 to 6 minutes.
Transfer egg whites to a large mixing bowl. Add a quarter of the beaten egg whites to egg yolk mixture and, with a rubber spatula, gently fold beaten egg whites into beaten egg yolks. Gradually add egg yolk mixture to beaten egg whites, gently folding from bottom of bowl up and over beaten egg whites.
Pour batter into a 10-inch, nonstick angel-food-cake pan; run a knife through the center of the batter to release any air bubbles. Place cake pan on a baking sheet. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until top springs back lightly when touched.
Invert pan over the neck of a bottle and cool about 1 1/2 hours.
To make the rum syrup:
In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Add orange and lemon slices, and continue boiling until syrup has reduced to 1 cup, about 30 to 40 minutes.
Remove pan from heat and discard the orange and lemon slices. Add the rum. Make holes about 1 inch apart in the top of a cake using the point of a bamboo skewer. Pour the warm syrup slowly over the cake. Let stand at room temperature until the syrup has been absorbed, about 1 hour.
To make the apricot glaze:
In a small saucepan set over low heat, melt the apricot preserves. Stir in the orange juice. Strain preserves and discard the solids. Set aside.
To assemble the cake:
Carefully loosen the cake from the pan with a flexible knife. Turn cake out onto a wire rack and transfer, top side up, to a serving pedestal. Brush reserved apricot glaze over top and sides of the cake. Refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours before serving. Garnish with figs, apricots and whipped cream. Serve.

The denizens of the green dells of Wisconsin are a bit happier these days, at least in Eau Claire (French for "City Of Very Nice, Quiet People Who Will Smile At You"). The L.E.Philips Memorial Library is now lending out iPads for weekly stints, allowing the good, country stock of Eau Claire to enjoy Apple's finest between two Sundays. They are also available for in-library use.
