Abbey-Roads: Saints who disappeared...

S. Roch

?

?

Hidden with Christ in God.

A meditative note in yesterday's Magnificat for the feast of St. Bartholomew described the Saint as "One of the anonymous Apostles, all the personal details of his life have disappeared behind the Gospel he proclaimed.? Like John the Baptist, he decreased to nothing so that Christ might increase."

I liked that a lot.? I thought of my saints who disappeared - often to the consternation of those who knew them in life, and even those who come to know them as saints.

Take St. Alexis for instance.? He disappeared - with the permission of his wife of course?- and became a pilgrim, dying unrecognized as a beggar beneath the staircase of his family home - where he had lived once he returned? to Rome.? Unrecognized, he truly lived a?hidden life.? As did St. Benedict Joseph Labre, and even Matt Talbot.? None of these guys wrote books or taught CCD, or preached in the streets,?or acted as usher in church on Sundays.? They just?disappeared - in plain sight.

The pilgrim St. Roch, whose feast we just celebrated August 16, also ended his life in anonymity, dying in the prison of his home town Montpellier, unknown and unrecognized.? His story here.

The other evening I?was reading about one of my favorite female saints, Margaret of Cortona.? All of her adult life she was shunned because?she had lived with her nobleman lover until his murder, and bore him a son out of wedlock.? After her conversion, rejected by family and friends,?she remained the object of suspicion and gossip by those who knew her past.? The Franciscans held her back from entering the Third?Order for three years to test?the sincerity of her conversion, and yet, after her admittance and adopting the penitents garb,?people continued to doubt her repentance.? Gradually she withdrew, becoming more and more of a recluse.? Her penance testified to the authenticity of her conversion - not words or writings; she voiced no objections to her detractors, no defense of her virtue...

Then there is St.?Marina, whose father kept her with him disguised as a boy,?when?he became a monk.? After her father's death, Marina remained in the monastery, living undetected as a man.? At one point Marina was accused of?fathering?the child of an innkeeper's daughter.? She was?dismissed?from the monastery and spent five years in expiation of the crime, but was received back into the community after serving her sentence.? When Marina died, the monks discovered she was a woman and therefore innocent of the paternity libel.????She never spoke a word in defense of her virtue.

Postering was like performance on the street for Publicit? Sauvage ...

The days of the cops always on our backs are long over for Baudoin Wart and Publicit? Sauvage, the company he founded 25 years ago to advertise cultural events by gluing posters on construction fences.

Until 1994, postering was against the law. Wart and the people he hired had to be on constant lookout for police.

We had to work fast, Wart said in an interview. One person, the checker, would watch for police and yell Leo if they were coming. It was a performance on the street, he said of their narrow escapes, burdened by posters and glue.

Publicit Sauvage went legitimate in 1994. Wart, with the support of 60 cultural organizations and a reputation for cleaning up its worksites negotiated a deal with the city that allowed signs where permitted by property owners.

So legitimate are Wart and Publicit Sauvage today that in May, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal awarded his company its Prix Arts-Affaires for small and medium size enterprises. The Board commended Wart for helping its clients mostly cultural groups devise advertising campaigns.. It also noted Warts his sense of history: He now has one of the largest private collections with over 40,000 posters that testify to Quebecs graphical and artistic evolution.

From this archive, which includes two or three copies of all but the earliest posters, a design professor at UQAM organized a yearlong series of 15 exhibitions.

Marc Choko said he chose about 750 posters based on the quality of their graphic design and the importance of the event. Every aspect of Montreals civic and cultural life is represented, he said.

The exhibitions began in January with concert posters at the Foufounes lectiques and will end with a show of Chokos choices of best poster for each of the 25 years. That exhibition opens Nov. 12 at UQAMs school of design.

Two exhibitions close soon: one of 35 posters advertising theatre, dance, opera and music events at Place des Arts ends Aug. 31, and a display of 45 circus posters at TOHU closes Sept. 4.

The next one to open is outdoors on Sept. 1, in the area known the Promenade des artistes behind Place des Arts, between President Kennedy Ave. and de Maisonneuve Blvd. This exhibition will have 100 posters of festivals and other cultural events that have taken place in the heart of downtown.

Three more exhibitions open next month: at the Bibliothque national on Sept. 11, at Publicit Sauvages headquarters on Frontenac St. on Sept. 20, and at Complexe Desjardins on Sept. 28.

Each exhibition has its own poster designed by one of the citys top graphic artists, and most are accompanied by special events. On Sept. 29, during the annual Journes de la culture, Choko will lead a discussion at Publicit Sauvage with some of the artists. Members of the staff will demonstrate poster hanging.

Warts staff numbers more than 30, including 11 who service 1,100 stores and restaurants, four who distribute flyers and eight who install and remove outdoor posters seven days a week.

Some posters are mounted on boards and put on metal fences at construction sites where workers might tear them down. Wart counters that possibility by installing the posters on Friday evenings and taking them down on Sunday nights. The posters get the maximum impact of a weekend, he said.

We find owners, make the arrangements and build the fences for free, he said. We clean up before and after.

Publicit Sauvage hasnt designed posters since its earliest days. There was too much competition, Wart said. Were just the distributor.

But what a distributor! Many of the people who distribute the posters are artists and musicians, Wart said. Poster hanger alumni include two members of Karkwa, who turned the place into a studio, Wart said. I want people to enjoy their work.

Isabelle Jalbert, general manager of the company, said that when she started working, Warts drums were on the premises, and sometimes people would play them. What a place to work, I thought.

The artists can think about their own creations on the job, she said. If they go on tour, we can replace them for a month until they get back. Theyre proud to work for Publicit Sauvage.

Salaries are low, Wart admitted, but there are lots of free tickets for employees and clients, he said. And the clients, mostly cultural organizations, get the benefits: Wart said it might cost $1.85 (the price varies with the size of the sign) to put a poster in a store for two weeks, less than five per cent of what it might cost for an advertisement over a urinal in a bar.

Wart said he played drums and did video performances when he was younger, but painting is now his creative outlet. He plans two shows of his paintings in cafs this fall, dates and places to be confirmed.

Romney: Big businesses are 'doing fine'

HOPKINS, Minn. - Mitt Romney tonight said that big businesses are "doing fine," using similar language that the presumptive nominee has hammered President Obama for using to describe the private sector earlier this year.

"I'm going to champion small business. We've got to make it easier for small businesses. Big business is doing fine in many places - they get the loans they need, they can deal with all the regulation," said Romney, speaking to a group of supporters at a private fundraiser in Minnesota this evening.

Romney then added that the reason that big businesses are "doing fine in many places" is because they are able to invest their money in "tax havens."

"They know how to find ways to get through the tax code, save money by putting various things in the places where there are low tax havens around the world for their businesses," said Romney. "But small business is getting crushed."

While Romney often talks about the negative impact regulations have on small businesses during his campaign speeches, his remarks tonight sounded similar to those made by Obama in June in which he said the private sector was "doing fine."

Romney has since used the president's words as a frequent example on the campaign trail of Obama being out of touch with struggling Americans.

At a campaign rally in Michigan just days following Obama's remarks Romney said that the president, "trying to explain that everything's going swimmingly," remarked that "the private sector is doing fine."

Eliciting boos from the crowd, Romney added, "Yeah, I don't hear that where I go across the country, with the 23 million people out of work or underemployed."

Additionally, while Romney said tax havens were helping businesses succeed during his remarks tonight, the candidate's own personal finances have come under scrutiny after it was revealed that some of his investments were placed in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Education of Business Online from NCSU Internet Marketing ...

Why is it that many of us are still looking for a secret magic formula to internet marketing strategies from the experts? Secret internet marketing strategies do not really exist as we imagine them to.

Time and time again I see people jumping from one internet marketing material to the other, looking for those expert secret strategies that guarantee millions of dollars in online sales.

- Is there really such a thing?

Yes and No.

I?ll explain why.

All over the web we come across materials promising extreme success through enormous traffic and increase of sales using special recipes never released before that will guarantee thousands of dollars with minimum effort and sometimes without spending a dime.

All this can be true, however what many of these people who promise you these wonderful opportunities, each time fail to tell you, is that when you buy these products/services containing Internet marketing strategies, you still need to do a lot of work and spend more money to be able to get the full benefit of what you just purchased.

I am not saying the materials are bad, but many of us still like to delude ourselves that we can grow our business to millions over night using the same system other marketing experts have used and without working at all.

The reality is that all businesses are unique and there is no one formula that can work for all. That is quite impossible.

There are many factors that contribute to the success of a business, and two very important ones are: Your unique selling proposition and your personality.

In order to become experts in our business, we really need to focus on is our long term goal and to understand the best way to reach that goal. Only when we are able to understand our goals, can we apply these internet marketing strategies to our business.

- The answers are right in front of you.

Sit back today and ask yourself the following questions:

REF1:

1: Why did I choose this line of business?

2: What am I trying to achieve?

3: How much money do I want to make from this venture?

4: What do I expect my business to look like in the next 5 years?

Answering these questions will help you understand your long term goal.

Money alone is not a motivation and also not a reason to go into business. If you?re thinking in this direction because of desperation, then you better rethink your strategy, if not you?ll be heading for the rocks.

The biggest names in business today are built on passion and a need to fill up a void. Money follows this passion after you create and satisfy want.

- How does this affect your secret internet marketing strategies?

Knowing why you are in business and where you want to get to has everything to do with your marketing.

For example: If you decided to go into business to help people loose weight, then it will be easy to identify your target market. Knowing this alone can help you quickly find out where they hang out online and what they need from you now and in the future.

This is already one step closer to a successful business!

Knowing your clients will also determine the evolution of your business. Taking the weight loss industry I mentioned above, you can even narrow your niche by choosing to help people loose weight or even prevent them from putting it back on. You can also diversify to psychology of the overweight man or woman, and how they should deal with society.

As you can see, knowing your business well will also give you a clearer picture of what you need to do to make your business successful.

You too can be an expert.

- So am I saying we should not purchase any marketing help?

On the contrary I really do support the purchase of marketing materials from experts, containing internet marketing secret strategies, but only when I know what I am looking to find inside. Do not expect these marketing materials to do the work for you.

Knowledge is power!

You need to constantly educate yourself as much as you can, this is what the marketing experts do. Read anything related to your business, every chance you get. Read articles on strategies and how to apply them on the internet. This will guarantee you are always on top of your game and one step a head of your competition.

Before you decide to purchase any marketing material, you need to first understand what your business is all about, where you want to go with your idea, what kind of image you want to portray, how much you want to get out of the venture and in what time frame you would like to achieve all this. Combine your instincts and passion for your business with the knowledge you require.

Carry out a research online to see if you can get answers from free resources that experts have published. There are so many materials on internet marketing strategies that you can get your hands on for free. Exhaust those resources, and only then should you decide to bring out your credit card and pay for anything.

Once again, there is no magic trick that will make you rich overnight, it all depends on how you use the information readily available to make your business grow.

FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO SUCCESS:

1: Take a pen and paper and write out the answers to the questions from (REF1) above.

2: When you have been able to determine your long term goal in a clearly written form also using figures as a measure of success, then, set a time frame you expect to reach this goal.

3: Now let?s break down this long term goal into multiple short term goals. Write on your sheet of paper or use a spread sheet to break down your goals into months at first and then break the months into weeks, then the weeks in days. By doing this you can easily create short term multiple check points to help you measure your success in the long run.

Example: I plan to make my weight loss product the number one name when it comes to weight loss products and programs, and I want to do this within 3 years earning 15 million dollars in total sales.

Taking this very simple example let?s now break this down into weeks and even days. For the sake of simplicity I?ll just take the monetary value as my end goal, leaving out my goal to become number one.

In three years I want to make $ 15 million dollars.

Dividing that by 3 means every year I need to make $ 5 million

Breaking this goal further into months, will mean that each month I need to make approximately $ 416,667

Breaking this further into weeks will mean I need to make approximately $ 7,986 each week.

Breaking this further down to days will mean that I need to make approximately $ 1,141 each day

Now compare $ 1,141 to $ 15,000,000, doesn?t $ 1,141 seem an easier target to reach?

4: Look at your target each day and write down what you need to do to achieve this daily goal.

Now that you have broken your long term goal into smaller bits, it will be easier to identify you internet marketing strategies and to take these shorter steps, measuring everything as you go along, thereby creating a trend for your business.

Breaking your goals down further into days and even hours, will also allow you to monitor activities closely as a result you can react quickly to market changes when it is required. Your marketing strategies will always be evolving as you put them into practice and you will becoem an expert in your field.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO REACH YOUR GOAL?

Here are some questions that come to mind:

- How many sales do you need to make in order to reach this figure?

- How many people do you need to reach weekly/daily in order to achieve this goal?

- What is your conversion ratio?

- What do you need to do to reach these people?

- How much will it cost you to reach your target market?

- What do you need to do to improve your conversion ratio?

- What marketing strategies are working for you on the internet and offline?

- What are the other factors that determine your sales volume (seasonal factors, income etc.)?

Depending on your goal, you will have many more questions to ask.

Your goal should not only be to make money, just like my example above. You can also have goals that are indirectly related to money, something like to become a marketing expert, the number one name in your industry. This too can also be broken down into multiple short term goals so that you can easily apply your marketing strategies to them.

There is always a process you need to follow in order to reach any goal, be it on the internet or offline. It?s all about taking your proposed final destination in time and identifying the shortest possible route to get there. In a nutshell, you need to find out what it takes for you to get from point A to point B in the shortest possible time, without wasting money. This is where your internet marketing strategies come into play.

You can now see that you have been able to clearly identify your goal, breaking it down into smaller time periods so you can easily identify the real questions that determine the route to success of your business. Only then, when you have the right questions, do you seek the answers inside paid materials.

Stop deluding yourself that the marketing materials from experts that contain secret internet marketing strategies promising you millions in online sales is the answer to your question. First look within and find out the right questions to ask, break them down into specifics, and then seek the answers. By doing this, you will change your thinking to success. You will able to create a clear picture of what you really need to do in order to take your business to the level you dreamed

Carell remembered as champion of Vanderbilt - Vanderbilt News ...

Posted on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 ? 3:38 PM

Ann Scott Carell died after a short illness on Aug. 20, in Nashville, surrounded by her family. She and her husband of 52 years, the late Monroe Carell Jr., the former CEO of Central Parking Corp., were longtime philanthropic leaders throughout Nashville.

Ann Scott Carell

The Carells? philanthropy at Vanderbilt supported many important efforts including endowed scholarships for undergraduate students and endowed chairs in the Department of Pediatrics.

Their deep commitment to care for sick children and vision for a special experience for young patients and their families resulted in a foundational gift and subsequent campaign for the construction of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children?s Hospital at Vanderbilt, which opened in 2004.

?We are very sorry to learn of Mrs. Carell?s passing,? said Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. ?The steadfast commitment and support she, Monroe and other members of the Carell family have provided Vanderbilt leaves a powerful and positive impact on the health and well-being of children throughout our region. Our thoughts are with the Carell family at this time of loss.?

She was born on June 18, 1935, in Nashville, the daughter of the late Alton Brooks Scott and Julia Lyle Scott and sister of the late Shirley Scott Lance. She graduated from West High School in Nashville and Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

As a wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Carell was devoted, loyal, encouraging and supportive, bringing both grace and strength to her many roles.

She loved raising her children; she was devoted to her sister; and she was a tender caregiver to her mother. Mrs. Carell enjoyed tennis and bridge, and she was a true lifelong learner.

At 65, she returned to piano lessons after a long absence and practiced regularly. She was an active and curious traveler, traveling extensively with her husband. Their favorite destination was Portofino, Italy, and after his death, she returned there with her daughters.

She was a strong advocate of education and taught for several years in Nashville public schools. She continued that dedication throughout her life and was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of the Harpeth Hall School. She was actively engaged in the planning for a new library for the school, and it now bears her name as the Ann Scott Carell Library. She started the Carell Artists in Residence program at Harpeth Hall with her husband, and in 2009 she received Harpeth Hall?s Dede Bullard Wallace Award for her service and generosity.

Mrs. Carell and her husband were founders of Pope John Paul II High School and Ensworth High School. In addition to those at Vanderbilt, they also funded scholarships at Aquinas College, Belmont University, Stephens College, the City University of New York, Ensworth High School and John Paul II High School, and often developed personal friendships with many of the students who benefited from their assistance.

Mrs. Carell was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, and she was made a Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II. With her husband, she was instrumental in raising funds to renovate and expand the historic 148-year-old Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, an order devoted to teaching and education. The Carells? giving helped build a new chapel for the Sisters.

A longtime supporter and Board of Trust member of Cheekwood, she recently returned to the board to begin a new term. She and her husband were the benefactors of the Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail at Cheekwood.

They also created Cheekwood?s Carell Dogwood Gardens, the first collection of dogwoods in North America to be recognized by the North American Plant Collections Consortium.

In addition to serving on the boards of Cheekwood and the Harpeth Hall School, at the time of her death, she served on the boards of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children?s Hospital at Vanderbilt and the Nashville Symphony. She was a member of United Way?s Tocqueville Society, and in 2006 was honored with the Women United in Giving ?Spirit of Giving? Award. She was a member of the Sow and Grow and Timberlee Garden Clubs, the Centennial Club, and the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee where she also served as past president.

Mrs. Carell is survived by three daughters, Julia Stadler (George), Kathryn Brown (David) and Edie Johnson (David), and by six grandchildren, Claire Stadler Lawhorne (Tom) of Savannah, Ga., and G. Monroe Stadler, Carell E. Brown, D. Nicholas Brown, William C. Johnson and Ann Scott Johnson, all of Nashville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children?s Hospital at Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt Gift Processing Office, PMB 407727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, Tenn. 37240-7727), the Harpeth Hall School (Advancement Office, 3801 Hobbs Road, Nashville, TN 37215), and the Dominican Sisters? St. Cecilia Congregation (801 Dominican Drive, Nashville, Tenn. 37228).

A US ally, Ethiopian leader Meles Zenawi dies

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia's long-time ruler and a major U.S. counter-terrorism ally who is credited with economic gains but blamed for human rights abuses, died of an undisclosed illness after not being seen in his East African country for weeks, Ethiopian authorities said Tuesday. He was 57.

Meles died in a Belgian hospital Monday just before midnight after contracting an infection, authorities said.

Hailemariam Desalegn, who was appointed deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs in 2010, became acting prime minister and will be sworn in as prime minister after an emergency meeting of parliament, said Bereket Simon, the communications minister. Parliament is controlled by Meles' ruling party and governing coalition, ensuring Hailemariam will be approved. No new elections will be scheduled, Bereket said.

The death is not likely to have an impact on the strong U.S. diplomatic and military relations with Ethiopia, given the hand-picked nature of the transition of power.

A European Union spokesman said that Meles died in Brussels. Officials had expected Meles to return to Ethiopia but a sudden complication reversed what had been a good recovery, Bereket said.

Meles hadn't been seen in public for about two months. In mid-July, after Meles did not attend a meeting of heads of state of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, speculation increased that his health problems were serious. Ethiopian officials gave no details and said the prime minister was in "very good" health and would return to office, but international officials said quietly it was unlikely he would recover.

State TV on Tuesday showed pictures of Meles as classical music played in the background. Simon called the death shocking and devastating and the country's council of ministers declared a national day of mourning.

On Tuesday afternoon in Belgium, an Associated Press Television News crew saw a car containing a casket being driven from Saint Luc Hospital in Brussels. After stopping to pick up personnel at the Ethiopian Embassy, the car drove to a private airfield where an Ethiopian plane waited on the tarmac. Meles' body was expected in Ethiopia later Tuesday.

Opponents of Meles accuse him of killing and jailing opposition members and of rigging elections. Ethiopia's Somalia community in particular has suffered under Meles, who won his last election in 2010 with a reported 99 percent of the vote.

Reaffirming the U.S. commitment to Ethiopia, President Barack Obama said Meles deserved recognition for his contributions to his country's development, including "his unyielding commitment to Ethiopia's poor." But Obama also encouraged Ethiopia to enhance its support for democracy and human rights.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Meles "will be remembered for his exceptional leadership and advocacy on African issues within and outside the continent, as well as for overseeing his country's economic growth and development," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

Former U.S. president and Nobel peace laureate Jimmy Carter called Meles "a committed supporter" for two decades of the Carter Center's work to improve the lives of Ethiopians that led to increased crop production, the training of 30,000 health workers, and programs to help prevent the spread of horrific diseases such as Guinea worm, river blindness and malaria.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, offered his condolences and praised Meles' development work, calling him "a respected African leader." But he also expressed concern about the state of democracy in the country.

"I sincerely hope that Ethiopia will enhance its path of democratization, upholding of human rights and prosperity for its people, and of further regional stabilization and integration," Barroso said in a statement.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga appealed to Ethiopians to "remain calm, maintain law and order and ensure the constitution is adhered to at this moment of transition."

Born on May 8, 1955, Meles became president in 1991 after helping to oust Mengistu Haile Mariam's Communist military junta, which was responsible for hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian deaths. Meles became prime minister in 1995, a position that is both the head of the federal government and armed forces.

The U.S. has long viewed Meles as a strong security partner and has given hundreds of millions of dollars in aid over the years. U.S. military drones that patrol East Africa ? especially over Somalia ? are stationed in Ethiopia. The U.S. goal for Somalia ? a stable government free of radical Islamists ? is in line with Ethiopia's hopes.

Though a U.S. ally, Ethiopia has long been criticized by human rights groups for the government's strict control, and Meles' legacy is likely to be mixed: positive on the economic development side and negative on the human rights side, said Leslie Lefkow, the deputy director for Human Rights Watch in Africa.

Meles brought Ethiopia out of a difficult period following Mengistu's rule and made important economic progress, she said, but the ruling party has been too focused on building its own authority in recent years instead of building up government institutions.

"I think on the human rights side his legacy will be much more questionable. The country remains under a very tightly controlled one-party rule and this will be the challenge for the new leadership, to take advantage of the opportunity that his death presents in terms of bringing Ethiopia into a more human rights-friendly, reform-minded style of leadership," Lefkow said.

During Meles' election win in 2005, when it appeared the opposition was likely to make gains, Meles tightened security across the country, and on the night of the election declared a state of emergency. Opposition members accused Meles of rigging the election, and demonstrations broke out. Security forces moved in, killing hundreds of people and jailing thousands.

In 2010 Meles won another five years in office while receiving a reported 99 percent of the vote in an election that the U.S. and other international observers said did not meet international standards.

Meles was the leader of a political coalition known as the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front. He was also the longtime chairman of the Tigray People's Liberation Front and has always identified strongly with his party.

"I cannot separate my achievements from what can be considered as the achievements of the ruling party. Whatever achievement there might have been, it does not exist independent of that party," Meles once said when asked what he thought would be his legacy.

Under Meles, Ethiopia saw strong gains in the education sector with the construction of new schools and universities. Women gained more rights. And in the mid-2000s Ethiopia saw strong economic growth, which won Meles international praise. The International Monetary Fund in 2008 said Ethiopia's economy had grown faster than any non-oil exporting country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite those gains, Ethiopia remains heavily dependent on agriculture, which accounts for 85 percent of the country's employment. Per capita income is only about $1,000, or roughly $3 a day.

Human rights groups have long denounced Meles' government for its use of arbitrary detention, torture, and surveillance of opposition members. The ONLF, an opposition group that mostly consists of ethnic Somalis, has openly clashed with the government, including in 2007 when Ethiopia sent troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabab militants.

The ONLF said Tuesday that Meles' death is an opportunity for a new government to "initiate a new era of peace, stability, freedom and justice for the people of Ogaden and not to pursue the failed policies of the past."

At the end of 2006, Somalia's U.N.-backed government asked Ethiopia to send troops into Somalia to try to put down an Islamist insurgency. Ethiopian troops moved into the country and captured Mogadishu, but the Somali population rebelled against what it saw as an occupation and Ethiopian forces withdrew in 2009.

Ethiopia again sent troops to Somalia in early 2012 as part of an increased international effort to pressure al-Shabab.

Earlier in Meles' tenure, from 1998-2000, Ethiopia fought a border war with Eritrea, a conflict that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.

Meles grew up in the northern town of Adwa, where his father had 13 siblings from multiple women. He moved to the capital, Addis Ababa, on a scholarship after completing an eight-year elementary education in just five.

Meles was the third African leader to die in office this year, following deaths in Malawi and Ghana. He is survived by his wife, Azeb Mesfin, a member of parliament, with whom he had three children.

State TV said funeral arrangements would be announced soon.

US: Assange trying to distract from sex case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration on Monday accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of making "wild assertions" about U.S. persecution to deflect attention from sex allegations he faces questioning for in Sweden.

The State Department said Assange's case has nothing to do with the United States or WikiLeaks publication of secret U.S. documents and is solely a matter for Britain, where he is now holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy, as well as Sweden and Ecuador.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland also berated Ecuador for granting Assange asylum from possible U.S. persecution at its embassy in London. And, she said Ecuador's attempt to have the Organization of American States take up the matter was a "sideshow."

Assange "is making all sorts of wild assertions about us, when, in fact, his issue with the government of the United Kingdom has to do with whether he is going to face justice in Sweden for something that has nothing to do with Wikileaks." Nuland told reporters.

"He is clearly trying to deflect attention away from the real issue, which is whether he is going to face justice in Sweden," she said. "That case has nothing to do with us, it's a matter between the U.K., Sweden and now Ecuador has inserted itself."

In a speech from the Ecuadorian embassy on Sunday, Assange proclaimed himself the victim of an American "witch hunt" that he urged President Barack Obama to renounce.

"The United States must vow that it will not seek to prosecute our staff or our supporters," Assange said, referring specifically to Pfc. Bradley Manning, who awaits trial in the scandal. He said the U.S. risks "dragging us all into a dark, repressive world in which journalists live under fear of prosecution."

He made no mention of the sex case, for which he faces extradition to answer questions about allegations he assaulted two women. Assange and his supporters claim the Swedish case is the first move of a Washington-orchestrated plot to make him stand trial in the U.S. The U.S. and Sweden dispute this.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's embassy in London two months ago and was last week granted diplomatic asylum by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. Assange praised Ecuador on Sunday as "a courageous Latin American nation (that) took a stand for justice" by offering him sanctuary.

Inside the embassy, Assange is out of reach of British authorities although Britain insists that if he steps outside, he will be detained and sent to Sweden.

After Britain appeared to suggest it could invoke a little-known law to strip the embassy of diplomatic privileges ? meaning police would be free to move in and detain Assange ? Ecuador protested and sought support from the Organization of American States.

The U.S., along with a small number of other OAS members, opposed involving the hemispheric bloc in the situation. On Monday, Nuland said that Ecuador was "trying to gin up trouble" in the OAS with the move.

"We don't see a role for the OAS in hypothetical situation that doesn't appear to be imminent anyway," she said. "We have very important business that we do in the OAS that has to do with the strength and health of democracy in the region and this is, frankly, a sideshow."

Egypt: Contaminated water causes illness, protests

CAIRO (AP) ? Villagers briefly locked the Egyptian health minister and a provincial governor inside a hospital room Tuesday after allegedly contaminated water caused hundreds of residents to fall ill, officials said.

A hospital in the Nile Delta province of Menoufia, 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Cairo, admitted dozens of people with severe cases of diarrhea, vomiting and high fevers, Health Ministry official Amr Kandil said.

Egypt's state-run news agency MENA said the number of sick people reached more than 400.

During a visit by Health Minister Mohammed Mustafa and Gov. Ashraf Helal to the hospital Tuesday, angry family members held up bottles of brackish-looking water and chanted, "drink it." Then they locked the two officials in a room.

After an hour, the two were released with police intervention. Mustafa ordered closure of illegal and unlicensed sources of water. Helal suspended government employees responsible for the village's main source of tap water.

Kandil said a medical team collected samples of the water the villagers say is polluted, in order to determine whether it was the cause of the sickness.

Water and food poisoning are common in Egypt, mainly because of poor oversight, deteriorating public services, and mushrooming slums and residential buildings outside government control across the country.

Movie review ? Red Dog | a splash of vanilla

I don?t think I?ve laughed and cried so much in my life watching this 2011 family movie.? Based on a true story and Australian legend, it?ll soften the hardest of hearts.? I just loved it.

For anyone who hasn?t yet seen it or for readers from o/s who might not know much about it ?.

Red Dog was a lovable kelpie/cattle dog?owned by a mining community in Western?Australia in the?1970s who was?made an honorary member of the workers union.? After living in the community for a few years, he roamed?hundreds of kilometers around Australia searching for his master, a bus driver he?befriended,?then returned to the?area he had lived in some years later.? The movie is a wonderful mixture of the actor dog?s naturally?cheerful?personality?(this doggy?s?acting is better than most human actors ? true story!), factual information, legend, and embellished comedy with a bit of cleverly manipulated computer graphics thrown in.

The movie portrays the community and time well ? no holds barred Australian mining workers,?a timely pop culture reference (a trip to the drive-in to see?the movie Jaws has a?very funny result)?stubbies and singlets,?irreverent and cheeky dialogue,?the dusty town pub,?living and working?in an isolated?place, all brought together by a nostalgic 1970s soundtrack.? I also appreciated the?achingly beautiful cinematography; some scenes showing lonely and dusty dessert roads, yet others showing the beauty of the?harbour and the pure colours?of?outback sunsets.

This cute little?rascal?got up to all sorts of shenanigans such as hitching a ride by standing in the middle of the road until?drivers were forced to stop and pick him up.? He insisted on getting on the bus, always sitting in the seat behind the driver and had a long standing conflict with?his nemesis, a cat?who lived in the local caravan park (the fight between Red Dog and Red Cat is hysterical).

Legend?has it a lady picked?up the real Red Dog one day, took him to where she thought he wanted to go but he wouldn?t get out of the car.? She then drove to another town, then another until she found the right one and Red Dog got out of the car and trotted away.

There?s absolutely nowhere like my country and this movie reminded me of that and how much I love it.

Movie still?from:? Red Dog the movie, Australia, 2011, South Australian Film Corporation, starring Koko, Josh Lucas, Rachael Taylor and Noah Taylor

Inflammation Is the Cause of Most Every Disease

When we control inflammation, we can control what causes cells to over proliferate, causing cancer. Or when we manage inflammation so that we stay resistant to pathogens that cross our path; we can avoid the other causes of disease that inflammation causes, like Alzheimer?s, and poly-cystic diseases of the kidney or lungs and more.

First by learning what causes us to gain weight, we will find which foods cause inflammation. Second, by managing our stress, we will learn how our stress hormones cause greater food intake and inflammation

Why do I, as a woman, think this is important? Because it has helped so many of my friends feel better. I know it is hard to believe that it is not portion control and exercise that makes the difference. I know I cannot portion control when I am still hungry! By feeding my body and cells, what they need to power themselves, is what causes me to be ABLE to portion control. I don?t even crave sweets anymore. (Of course I did when I started at age 46? because I was still having those hormone cycles that caused me to be insatiable. As I aged.. I am 58 now, learning what to eat to feel full, and the slow change in hormones enabled me to manage my diet, so I didn?t crave all the stuff that I thought I couldn?t live without.

Now when I eat outside my ?list? I still get too-o-o hungry and eat more. I am careful to eat as I have found what works to keep me satisfied. And More IMPORTANTLY, my colon moving without fits of starts and stops.

I know I am less inflamed, because I can keep my colon moving without digestive enzymes.

When you read the article about getting older is not about eating less, it is about enough nutrition. You will see, that my B Blood Type friends eat totally opposite of me, and yet we all manage to lose or maintain a weight, and have good blood chemistries. It is NOT ABOUT ONE THING WORKS FOR EVERYONE. We are individuals, with different likes and dislikes. We can learn to eat what is ?good? for us, when we feel better. Sallie and I are good examples!

I encourage you to learn how to empower your body for the future; when you get older, you may want to know how your body works, and what will keep your colon moving, so you don?t have to have any one help ?pull? it out of you. I know that is gross.

Learn how to create a non-acidic environment to keep your bones strong. Being able to walk when you are older will help keep everything running smoothly.

Create a cellular barrier, so that bacteria, and viruses will not find an easy place to make your body a home. Fight lung and kidney diseases by creating a healthy environment, and they won?t take hold. Learn what supplements will help with the fight until you are strong and sure enough to keep your body in top shape. (The best shape you can be for your age and genetics).

We even have cancer cell ?identifiers? that can be ready to fight those cancer cells when they become ?exposed?.

Fighting disease with food, and immune support is the greatest thing, because we now have the tools and information to fight to the best of our ability.

Legal Schnauzer: Child Rapist Jerry Sandusky Received a ...

Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was granted a motion that forced prosecutors to provide specifics about charges in his child sexual abuse case. The defendants in the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman were denied a similar motion on charges of public corruption.

What does that mean? One judge found that Sandusky was entitled to specifics about charges that essentially alleged he was a serial child rapist. Another judge found that Siegelman and codefendant Richard Scrushy were not entitled to specifics about charges that essentially sought to criminalize a standard political transaction.

Does that sound fair to you? Is that what passes for justice in American courts?

The legal document in question is called a motion for a bill of particulars. That one was granted for Sandusky, while one was denied for Siegelman and Scrushy, should raise profound questions in the minds of all thinking citizens. After all, Sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys. Defendants in the Siegelman case were convicted primarily of federal funds bribery, a charge involving law that is so murky federal judges cannot even agree on proper jury instructions for it.

That Siegelman and Scrushy were denied a bill of particulars might be the single most glaring sign that U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller handled the case in a crooked fashion. If the prosecution had been forced to provide a bill of particulars, it probably would have shown that the alleged "crimes" took place in summer 1999, while the indictment came in May 2005--meaning the case should have been barred by the five-year statute of limitations.

What is a bill of particulars, and why does it matter? A paper called "Pretrial Proceedings and Motions," written by two federal public defenders and presented in March 2012, provides the answers. Rule 7(f) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure governs a bill of particulars in U.S. courts. The Sandusky case was tried in Pennsylvania Common Pleas Court, but most state courts have a provision for a bill of particulars. In some jurisdictions, including Alabama, it's called a motion for a more definite statement.

From page 10 of the "Pretrial Proceedings" paper:

The purpose of a bill of particulars is to inform the defendant of the nature of the charge to enable him to prepare a defense and to minimize the danger of surprise at trial. United States v. Diecidue, 603 F.2d 535, 563 (5th Cir. 1979), cert. denied, 445 U.S. 946 (1980). A bill of particulars may be useful in detailing a vague indictment, but it cannot save a fatal indictment. Russell v. United States, 369 U.S. 749, 769 (1962). A request for a bill of particulars is to be liberally construed, 1 C. Wright, Federal Practice and Procedure: Criminal ? 129 (2d Ed. 1982), but the decision whether to grant the bill is committed to the trial court?s discretion. United States v. Martino, 648 F.2d 367 (5th Cir. 1981).

A bill of particulars is designed primarily to keep the government from getting away with a vague indictment. And let's consider the two provisions in bold above: (1) The decision to grant or deny a request for a bill of particulars rests with a trial court's discretion; (2) Such a request is to be construed liberally.

Translation: A call that is remotely close should go in favor of the defendants. And that means Fuller probably had no lawful grounds for denying a bill of particulars in the Siegelman case. That becomes even more likely when you consider the usual grounds for seeking a bill of particulars. From page 10 of the "Pretrial Proceedings" paper:

Typical requests include:?
1. Identity of co-conspirators . . .??
2. Overt acts in furtherance of the conspiracy . . .??
3. Dates . . .??
4. Location . . .??
5. Identity of the victims.

Seeking the time frame in which alleged unlawful acts occurred clearly is proper grounds for a bill of particulars. And that is exactly the information Siegelman's attorneys sought. Why did they need it? The answer is spelled out on pages 60-61 of an appellate brief, which can be viewed at the end of this post.
The prosecutors artfully drafted the indictment to mask its statute of limitations defect by setting the time frame of the alleged offense as ?[f]rom on or about July 19, 1999, and continuing through on or about May 23, 2000. . . . ? The original indictment was returned on May 17, 2005. . . . On its face, the Indictment alleged that a crime occurred within the five-year limitations period. And when Governor Siegelman moved for a Bill of Particulars, pointedly asking among other things ?when, specifically, did the action alleged take place?,? the prosecution opposed the motion, arguing that a Bill of Particulars would reveal the prosecutors? ?trial strategies.? . . . The prosecution even specifically objected to the request that it disclose the dates on which allegedly criminal actions took place. The District Court denied Governor Siegelman?s motion.

To put it bluntly, federal prosecutors pulled a not-so-subtle con game in the Siegelman case, and Fuller let them get away with it. The judge did it by failing to liberally construe a request for a bill of particulars, as required by law. And that was critical on a time-frame issue that would have shown the prosecution was barred by the statute of limitations.

In my view, the Pennsylvania judge ruled correctly in granting Jerry Sandusky's request for a bill of particulars. Despite the monstrous nature of his alleged crimes, Sandusky was entitled under the law to know specifics that were not spelled out in the indictment.

Siegelman and Scrushy clearly were entitled to the same information. That their motion for a bill of particulars was denied is the No. 1 reason Scrushy has unlawfully served a federal prison sentence--and Siegelman is due back in federal custody by September 11.

What's the lesson in all of this? An accused child rapist is likely to be treated more fairly in court than a former Democratic governor being tried under a Republican regime.

Is that really what we want from our system of "justice"?

A Tour of Concorso Italiano 2012 - Car and Driver Blog

A Tour of Concorso Italiano 2012

One of the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance?s oldest sideshows, the Concorso Italiano, completed its 27th edition with the usual gathering of Latin bombshells, plus a tribute to the works of Turin coachbuilder Bertone, in all its glorious and, with credit to the show, not as glorious aspects. Lined up in the center ring with the various concept prototypes were the several Lamborghinis that Bertone produced, the concept Fiats and Alfa Romeos, plus were a few workaday cars that Bertone put its stamp on for the sake of earning some extra lire for the corporate coffers. Thus, Concorso produced a display that was a surprisingly good cross-section of vehicles from a company that, like everybody else, sometimes had to hustle for a buck. Fiat also used the occasion to reveal the new 500T, a turbocharged 135-hp 500 that slots between the 101-hp Sport and the 160-hp Abarth. Prosciutto was consumed, Chiantis were uncorked, and the weather was fantastic. Forza Italia!

1967 Jaguar Pirana/Piranha

1967 Jaguar Pirana/Piranha

One of the stars of the Bertone ring, the one-of-one Pirana from the 1967 London Motor Show broke cover after decades hiding out in private collections in England and Palm Springs, California. The name on the car is actually spelled Piranha, but as that was copyrighted elsewhere, the company publicized it as the Pirana. It isn?t hugely significant to Bertone?s history except as a demonstration of how the company often produced its concepts with the hopes of selling designs or body-building business to large carmakers. Jaguar sent Bertone a chassis and powertrain for a ?67 E-Type 2+2 and Bertone produced the beautiful coupe you see here. When Jaguar passed on the finished product, Bertone sold it to Lamborghini and it became, with a few alterations, the 1968?1978 Lamborghini Espada. Owner Edward Superfon of Los Angeles put it through a stem-to-stern restoration after purchasing it two years ago, taking it back to its original metallic silver-flake paint.

Speaking of Espadas, this beautiful Series III was, as of last November, a wrecked parts car with extensive crash damage to both ends. But owner Bob Huber of Los Angeles rescued it in his garage, pulling the chassis straight, hand-fabricating a new quarter-panel for it, and painstakingly rolling the aluminum hood through an English wheel to restore the tricky shape. With no time to properly road test it, he made three false starts on the trip to Monterey with problems, then finally arrived after midnight the night before the show.

1984 Fiat Bertone Ritmo Cabrio Palinuro

1984 Fiat Bertone Ritmo Cabrio Palinuro

Building convertible versions of plebian production cars, such as the Fiat Ritmo (Strada, in the U.S.) hatchback, is how many styling houses made extra money through the lean years of the late ?70s and 1980s. Owner Alberto Massarotto (note: it?s spelled wrong on the sign) of Willow Glen, California, says his car?s structural integrity is ?non-existent? but it still manages to handle ?better than it looks.?? A Europe-only model with a 75-horse, 1.5-liter engine and about 61,000 miles, this Ritmo Cabrio is one of only two in the U.S., says Massarotto.

1954 Fiat Stanguellini concept

1954 Fiat Stanguellini concept

Bertone built this car for the 1954 New York auto show, where it was purchased by none other than racer Briggs Cunningham for his wife, who, according to current owner Pete Vasquez, hated it. The car is a grab bag of parts from Stanguellini, Siata, and Abarth, and was intended to be a run of nine cars but, apparently, only two were actually built. The side-hinged rear hatch is a notable feature.

1937 Lancia Aprilia Sport Zagato

1937 Lancia Aprilia Sport Zagato

Originally built as a one-off prototype for racing, the actual car was lost during World War II when Zagato?s factory was bombed. In 2006 for the 100th anniversary of Lancia, Zagato built this recreation in the old ways using a 1937 Lancia Aprilia road car as a donor, which was the basis for the original. Today, Zagato is planning to build a total of nine copies priced at around $300,000, using derelict Aprilias rather than cars in good condition.

1953 MG-Arnolt Bertone

1953 MG-Arnolt Bertone

A mashup of names indicative of how it was back then: The 100 MG-Arnolts built started as MG TDs that Chicago businessman Stanley H. ?Wacky? Arnolt, the local BMC distributor, sent to Bertone for new bodies. According to owner Terry Sanders, the car failed because it cost more than $3000 when the Jaguar XK-120 was only a few hundred dollars more. ?Which would you rather have?? says Sanders. Still, the Arnolt is a rarity, one of just 65 coupes ever made (the rest were convertibles).

1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT

1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT

Owner Ken Roath of Newport Beach, California, bought this stunning Pininfarina beauty in Europe in 2007. At the time of purchase, the 250 Europa GT was sliver with a red interior, but Roath had it restored by Ferrari Classiche?Ferrari?s own restoration shop?back to the original two-tone pale green and white colors. The 250 Europa is a big car with a relatively small engine, being the first model to use the then-new Colombo-designed 250 V-12. Roath has driven it twice in the modern Mille Miglia. ?That?s why I bought it; it?s the most comfortable car you can use in the Mille,? he said.

1974 Maserati Khamsin

1974 Maserati Khamsin

Perhaps the last great Italian GT design from Bertone, the Khamsin went into production in 1974, after Maserati and Citro?n had joined dubious forces. The 4.9-liter V-8 was derived from the earlier Ghibli, but the styling was somewhat different and highly exotic with features such as the rear glass in which the taillights seem to float, and the asymmetrical louvers in the hood. Just 430 Khamsins were built.

1971 DeTomaso Pantera

1971 DeTomaso Pantera

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a Pantera is supposed to look like. From the small stainless bumpers to the carpeted engine compartment to the dorky plastic steering-wheel, safety dashboard, and pea-green paint, this super clean example from California is the car Lee Iacocca had in mind when he did the deal to sell the Pantera through Lincoln and Mercury dealers. On the dashboard: Pantera designer Tom Tjaarda?s signature.

1960 Abarth 850 Allemano Coupe

1960 Abarth 850 Allemano Coupe

This red cutie, one of just 30 made, was driven 2461 miles from Chicago to Monterey for the show by owner Lou Herrin, who claims 35 mpg. Based on the mid-engine Fiat 850 coupe, the body was built by Carrozzeria Allemano in Turin and modified in the workshop of Fiat tuner Carlo Abarth. Herrin gets the prize for distance and bravery.
