A celebration for veterans turned tragic Thursday in Texas when four veterans were killed when a flatbed truck they were on was struck by a freight train
"Just blocks away from where they were supposed to be. The incident occurred, minutes could have changed the outcome of this. Just hard to deal with," said Military ROTC Member Adam Gregory.
Three of the victims were identified as Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, Sgt. Maj. Williams Lubbers and Chief Warrant Officer Gary Stouffer. Chief Warrant Officer Stouffer lived in Onslow County while Lubbers lived in Fayetteville and served more than 20 years in the army, most of them as special forces.
"This is heartfelt for any family but especially being a military family I think it's really sad and tragic and my hear goes out to them," said one of Lubbers' neighbors.
Sgt. Major Boivin also lived in Fayetteville and recently worked as a defense contractor at K2 Solutions in Southern Pines.
Flags outside the k2 offices where Sgt. Maj. Boivin worked flew at half staff on Friday.
Workers we spoke with said they did not want to talk to us on camera, but are deeply saddened by the loss. Boivin's neighbors described him as someone who always looked out for them.
"That's what our special forces do. We have several around and we're so fortunate to have them. And now we don't have Larry," said Boivin's neighbor Dottie Lowell.
The crash injured at least 16 others, including Lubbers wife.
NTSB is investigating what happened, while the military community mourns the loss of four soldiers killed during an event meant to honor them and their service.
