Top Purchases for New Homeowners | Modern Dignity - The Social ...

The people of the United States move more frequently than any other people in the world. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that over 43 million people in the United States move each year, and they spend more than $150 billion on moving and new-home expenses. New mover marketing is big business, and the sector shows no signs of slowing. Anyone who sells the items most frequently purchased by new homeowners would do well to begin a direct marketing campaign targeting movers. Following are a few of the top purchases for new homeowners.

Home Improvements
Home remodeling is one of the top expenditures for new homeowners, and most home improvements are done in kitchens and bathrooms. Most contractors stand to gain by marketing to new movers. However, DIY home improvement products such as paint and painting supplies are also very popular.

Home Furnishings
A close second to home improvements is home furnishings. Many people do not want to go through the hassle of moving furniture that they plan on replacing in just a few years. In addition, many new movers are looking to make a fresh start. They do not want to recreate their old homes. They want something completely new. The home furnishings purchased most frequently are living room furniture, dinette sets and bedroom sets.

Window Treatments and Linens
New window treatments and linens are almost a necessity for a new home, especially if the new homeowners are repainting or buying new furniture. Most people moving into a new home fail to budget for this expense, but they purchase these items regardless. Others buy new window treatments and linens when they want to spruce up their new homes but cannot afford to spend a lot of money on improvements.

Appliances

Many new homes do not come with new appliances. Some homes have old, outdated appliances, and others have none at all. Washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, ovens and refrigerators are all frequently purchased by new movers.

Patio and Garden Supplies
Most people moving from apartments to houses do not have any patio furniture or garden supplies. At the same time, many people moving from one house to another leave these items behind or chuck them in the dumpster because they display too much wear.

Pet Supplies
New pets go hand in hand with new homes, and a lot of new mover marketing comes from pet supply retailers . While dogs and cats are the most popular pets, many new homeowners also buy birds, fish and small mammals.
